history

Through her upbringing in rural and remote areas of Australia, Karen has a deep sense of connection with the land. Karen was born 1968 in Bendigo, Victoria. A passion for drawing developed from an early age along with a fascination for the greater natural order of things. A family move to Western Australia in the early eighties saw Karen spending her teen years in the remote north west, whereby the vastness of the Pilbara landscape compelled her to paint. It left an indelible imprint and remains a source of inspiration for her.

In 1993, Karen graduated with a Diploma of Arts (Art & Design) from The Western Australian School of Art, Design and Media. In the subsequent years, Karen freelanced as a graphic designer and illustrator.

Through invitation, she taught at both private and government tertiary institutions on a casual basis in Art and Design. Concurrent to this, Karen exhibited her own work.

Winning the 1998 Burswood [National] Art Award launched Karen’s career, whereby she has exhibited internationally, nationally and locally.

"Works I produce are the end result of working in conjunction with other pieces on a rotation basis. At any given time there are at least twenty pieces being created with some put aside for indefinite periods whilst others are completed immediately. This process allows for the works to evolve in different directions making for interesting discoveries and accidental happenings along the way..." Karen Blandford 2007
